Welcome spring!
Cuando intentamos traducir
en inglés las expresiones del español (desde) hace + tiempo /
durante + tiempo, nos encontramos que no sabemos si usar for, since,
ago o during; y lo mismo nos sucede con el tiempo verbal que
dudamos si debe ir en simple present, past simple or present
perfect.
En inglés esta expresión
corresponde a la construcción:
Present perfect + FOR + time
I have known
Jane for a long time.
I
haven’t had a holiday for ages.
Aunque esta misma estructura
en inglés puede equivaler a más de una expresión del español como podemos ver
en el siguiente ejemplo:
They have lived
here for a year.
En español, la podemos traducir
de varias formas:
Ellos viven aquí desde hace un año.
Ellos han vivido aquí durante un año.
Hace
un año que ellos viven aquí.
Ya veis que hay varias
traduciones posibles pero todas ellas, y eso es lo importante, corresponden a
la misma construcción en inglés.
El present perfect
sería sustituido por el present perfect continuous (have + past
participle be + verb –ing), cuando la acción no se ha completado en el momento
de hablar:
I have been
living in this house for two years.
Tanto FOR como SINCE pueden
ir con el present perfect o present perfect continuous;
sin embargo, se usan de forma diferente:
- FOR +
periodo de tiempo:
He’s been here for two hours.
- SINCE
+ comienzo del periodo de tiempo:
He’s been here
since three o’clock .
Van acompañados del present
perfect continuous para describir la duración de la acción. En otra ocasión
veremos más detalladamente los usos de este tiempo frente al present perfect.

Si lo que queremos es traducir
la expresión HACE + tiempo ya no es posible usar since o for, sino que
debemos usar en su lugar la expresión inglesa:
Past simple + time + AGO
I went her two
years ago.
Como veis AGO se
emplea junto con el pasado simple o continuo pero nunca con el present
perfect. Las preguntas con ago sería con HOW LONG AGO + past simple:
How long ago
did you met her?
Recordad:
FOR / SINCE + PRESENT PERFECT
FOR + PAST SIMPLE
AGO + PAST SIMPLE
FOR se puede traducir también como “durante” y cuando lo
traducimos así nos planteamos otra duda: cuándo se usa FOR y cuándo DURING.
La diferencia principal
entre ellos sería que during lo usaríamos para expresar el tiempo
en el que se desarrolla la acción; mientras que for nos indica lo
que dura esa acción:
It rained
during the night.
It
rained for two hours.
Otra diferencia entre ambos
es, como veis en los ejemplos anteriores, que during va seguido de un
sustantivo mientras que for acompaña al periodo de tiempo:
during the night.
for two hours.

Choose the correct form: for or since:
- I’ve worked
here for /since six years.
- I lived here
for / since three months.
- I’ve worked
in the factory for /since 1970.
- He’s been
abroad for / since five years
- I studied
Italian for /since five years.
- I’ve known
her for / since 1980.
- I’ve lived
here for / since I was a child.
- We’ve been in
- I’ve known
them for / since years.
- We practised
for / since months.
Write the sentences with for or since and the verb in past simple or
present perfect as necessary.
- I (study) for
/ since six years, but then I stopped.
- She (work)
for me for / since she left school.
- I (work) in
the restaurant for / since six months, but then it closed.
- I (live) here
for / since I was a little girl.
- He (be) in
prison now for / since three years.
- I (not see)
him for / since he left the office.
- I (not see)
her for / since several years, and
then I met her again.
- We (be) in
- I (work) here
for / since seven years, but it’s time to leave now.
- I (live) in
